Orientation

Important dates: Orientation 2009

Week O: Orientation for undergraduate and graduate students beginning a course in semester 1, 2009 will run from Tuesday 24 February to Friday 27 February 2009.

Planning for Orientation will start over the next few months and faculty representatives will be contacted soon.

What happens at Orientation?

The Orientation program provides new students with opportunities to engage with life at the University of Melbourne. Major events for undergraduate students include the Host Program, faculty and department introductions and social occasions, student services carnival, student association events, clubs and societies and more.

Graduate students - both coursework and research higher degree - have access to programs unique to their particular cohorts, plus invitations to attend relevant parts of the central program (e.g. generic skills, IT and library sessions, as well as the Student Services Carnival).

All initiatives are planned in close consultation with faculties and Student Centres and with central administration and service areas. This page informs University staff of Orientation initiatives and important key dates and provides you with resources to use in the creation of your own orientation programs and events. Transition and Orientation staff are available to assist you with all aspects of your local programs, so please contact us if needed.

The Student Engagement Continuum

A continuum of student engagement has been developed by Transition and Orientation Programs, detailing the stages a student goes through from being a prospective student, getting an offer, going through the administrative enrolment (online enrolment), academic enrolment (choosing subjects; Academic Advice Day), orientation to university (social and academic), to starting uni and settling in.

This continuum will be used to guide students through the process, as well as provide staff with clear information and resources regarding what should be delivered to students at each step. Some of these resources include suggested templates for the many presentations and publications delivered to students at each stage of the continuum.

A copy of the Student Engagement Continuum (42Kb) has been made available for download by university staff.

MM08 Orientation Review

In May 2007, Transition and Orientation Programs conducted a review of current Orientation practices in consultation with colleagues from across the University. As a result of these discussions, a report was produced outlining several key recommendations which have been implemented in Orientation 2008. Please contact Kathryn Boin if you would like a copy of the Review report.
