Transition in courses

Each course has programs and support services to help you adjust to life at university. They help you meet other students studying your course, develop valuable skills, and find resources. These might include mentor schemes, study groups, first-year learning centres or study skills sessions. Biomedicine

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Biomedicine are entitled to join the Biomedicine Student Society, which aims to meet the specific interests of our students. Membership of a club or society is an excellent way for students to meet new people, expand interests and take on leadership roles whiles studying.

The (interim) Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Student Centre in the Medical Building is staffed by friendly Enquiries Officers who can answer most of your questions. You can also book an appointment with a Student Adviser if you need more detailed information about your course or enrolment.

Economics and Commerce

Get to know more about the people and places of the faculty by taking a tour of our website. In particular, check out the Student Services section for information about the First-Year Peer Mentor Program and faculty resources like the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) who offer services such as learning skills booklets and workshops, individual consultations and T2C (Transition to Commerce)- the subject that will launch your study career in Economics and Commerce.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce can choose from seven clubs and societies associated with the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, which aim to meet the specific interests of our students. Membership of a club or society is an excellent way for students to meet new people, expand interests and take on leadership roles while studying. New students will have an opportunity to meet and get involved in the wide range of student clubs and societies during the University Orientation Program, and the numerous events and functions held throughout the year.

The Commerce Student Centre on the ground floor in the Babel Building is staffed by Student Advisers who can answer many of your questions. You can also book an appointment with a Course Adviser online, if you need more detailed information about your course or enrolment, or would like to speak with a Faculty Disability or Mental Health Contact Officer.

Welcome to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education!Come and visit our friendly and helpful staff at the Education Student Centre located on Level 2 of the Alice Hoy Building. Engineering

Take some time to familiarise yourself with the Engineering website and explore the info stop portal, full of practical information to make your time with us more successful and rewarding. Participate fully in the interactive activities and opportunities for group work available through the new Engineering Systems Design and Informatics subjects. Check out the Engineering student clubs and societies for support, guidance and fun activities. Visit the new Engineering Learning Centre (1st floor Old Engineering) to study, make new friends, or just relax. Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

Find out if your School offers a Mentor Program. Medicine students can talk to the Academic Mentor and Dental Science students should ask their first-year coordinator. Online, make sure you know how to use the learning management system (LMS). International students or those whose first language is not English can be part of the International Student Support Program (ISSP), which includes study groups, language support, study skills workshops and a Buddy Scheme. You will hear about the ISSP during Orientation sessions. This program is available in all major campus and teaching sites, assisting students from the start to the completion of their course (including accessing medical internships).

Music

Students in latter years have been trained to assist you through the Music Mentor Scheme. You will meet your mentor during Orientation and at a number of times during Semester One. There will also be study skills workshops which you can attend with your mentor group, and you are encouraged to contact your mentor whenever you want to clarify anything. Science

Learn valuable skills and meet other Science students at the 'Science 101' transition program: a two-week series of seminars, which will provide you with hints on getting the most out of lectures and tutorials, getting help from staff and finding resources. By attending Science 101 you will be allocated to a study group for the rest of semester. In addition, you can also attend Science Study Skills Seminars designed to provide advice and insight into tackling Science assessment tasks.

You can also visit the First Year Learning Centres in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Maths & Statistics and Physics. The Professional Skills Program for Information Systems students includes a transition component 'IS 101' that will address many academic and social aspects of university life.

University life isn't only about study; there is also a vibrant social aspect and the Science Student Society is the organisation to assist you to tap into the rich social life of the University. You can contact the Science Student Society (SSS) by email and check out the wide variety of other clubs and societies on campus on the Student Union website.

VCA

Welcome to the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts! The VCA Orientation Program will:

In addition each discipline conducts an Academic Orientation day in the first week of semester.

Also, the Learning Languages and Skills Unit (ASU) is holding workshops in Semester 1, 2008, which can assist you with journal writing, essay writing, test preparation and presentation skills. For more details on these workshops please visit the ASU website.

The Faculty of the VCA is in the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct, therefore you will have opportunities to access the many activities, exhibitions and performances offered by the National Gallery of Victoria, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Ballet, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, the Melbourne Theatre Company and the Malthouse Theatre, to name but a few of our immediate neighbours.
