Application Process

Note: Applications for the 2008 Extension Program (including late applications) have now closed.

STEP 1 - Read the Extension Program brochure and website.

Extension Program brochures can be obtained from your school or by emailling extension-program@unimelb.edu.au or phoning 8344 5538.
  • Choose an Extension Program Subject Area (please note that you can only undertake one University subject via the Extension Program)
  • Obtain teaching location details
  • Check that you have completed or are completing the appropriate prerequisite studies required for the Extension Program subject you wish to study
  • Check that you expect to achieve the standard of results required to be eligible for Extension Program selection

Undertaking the Extension Program in addition to your other VCE commitments is a decision that requires careful consideration. The following questions will assist you in taking into account a range of important aspects.

Program Eligibility:
  • Are you undertaking a minimum of five VCE units 3/4
    (or equivalent)?
  • Have you completed and/or will you be completing the appropriate prerequisite studies for the Extension Program subject you wish to apply for?
  • Do you expect to achieve the required results, both in the prerequisite and in all other subjects, to be eligible for selection into the Extension Program?
  • Have you discussed your application with your
    Year 12/VCE Coordinator?
  • Have you discussed your application with your parents and/or guardian?

Program Attendance:
  • Where are classes held for your subject area - on campus, at a School Centre, or at a combination of both?
  • If some or all classes are held at a School Centre, is there a School Centre convenient to where you study and/or live?
  • Does the School Centre charge fees? If so, have you discussed this with your parents/guardian?
  • How many hours of classes and numbers of days per week are you required to attend your Extension Program subject? When are classes for your subject area held? Can you make it to every class on time? What special arrangements might you need to make with your school?
  • How will you travel between school, your Extension Program classes and home? How much time will this take? Have you discussed transport arrangements with your parents/guardian?

 Balancing Commitments:
  • Will you have time to successfully complete an Extension Program subject in addition to your Year 12 subjects?
  • How much time will any extra-curricular activities you are involved in take next year? Do you have time to take on Extension Program studies as well?

The Application, Selection and Enrolment Process:
  • If you are applying for a subject area at a School Centre, have you listed at least two School Centre preferences?
  • If you will be away in mid-December have you made arrangements to ensure that your Year 11 results are sent to the University of Melbourne by 15 December?
  • If you will be away in mid-January have you made arrangements for another person to check your mail and notify you if you are offered a place in the Program?
  • If you are made an offer, will you be able to attend Extension Program Welcome Day in mid January?
  • If you will be away during the application and selection process, have you provided the University with alternate contact details, in case we need to discuss your application?

STEP 2 - Complete an application form.

Application forms can be obtained from your school or by phoning 8344 5538 or emailing extension-program@unimelb.edu.au.

When filling out the form, don't forget to:

  • Fill out every section and sign the declaration
  • Ask your school's VCE Coordinator to complete and sign Section K and your Principal to sign Section L as evidence that your school recommends you for extension studies

Music Applicants: You must attach a letter from your music teacher which addresses, in detail, how you meet the criteria for exceptional achievement in music. Refer to the selection criteria for more information.

*It is recommended that you keep a photocopy of your completed application form for your records.

STEP 4 - By Monday 10 December 2007 submit to the University of Melbourne Extension Program:

  • Copies (not originals) of your Year 11 Semester 2 reports for all subjects undertaken. Please include a key that defines the grading/marking system used by your school

Please note:

  • We will send you an 'Extension Program cover sheet to accompany results' together with a letter acknowledging receipt of your application in early December.
  • By signing the Applicant’s Declaration you have given permission for the University of Melbourne to obtain VCE units 3 and 4 results for all subjects for which you are applying to undertake Extension studies with the University directly from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), therefore you are not required to send these results in to the University.

Don't forget to:

  • Attach the 'Extension Program cover sheet to accompany results' to the set of results you submit.
  • Use Express Post or hand deliver your results to ensure they arrive on time.
Important: It is your responsibility to make arrangements to submit your results by the deadline. If you will be away when your results become available, you must make arrangements for someone else (e.g. relative, friend, teacher) to post them while you are away. You must ensure that the person you are entrusting submits your results by the deadline, as no extensions will be granted, except in special circumstances and with official documentation (e.g. medical certificate).
