Demands of the Program

If you are undertaking a normal full-time VCE (or its equivalent); have exceptional ability in a particular subject; and thrive on a high work load; then extension studies may be an option for you. However, in making your decision remember that it is your VCE or IB subjects that contribute to the bulk of your ENTER and hence are most important in attaining university entrance.

Extension Program subjects are one option for high achieving students wanting to deepen their knowledge in a particular area. You may, however, prefer to broaden your education by taking a wider range of Year 12 subjects or by participating more fully in extracurricular activities such as music, drama, sport and so on. It's important to consider your options carefully in order to achieve the right balance.

Applying to complete an extension study in addition to your other commitments is a decision that needs to be carefully considered. Considering the following questions may assist you:

  • Will you have time to successfully complete an Extension Program subject in addition to your Year 12 subjects? (Factor in 10 - 12 hours for your extension study subject - total class time and private study time.)
  • How much time will any extra-curricular activities you are involved in take next year? Do you have time to take on Extension Program studies as well?
  • Have you considered how you will get to and from your Extension Program classes and how much time this will take? Have you discussed transport arrangements with your parent/guardian?
  • How many hours of classes and number of days per week are you required to attend for your Extension Program subject? Can you make it to every class and arrive on time? What special arrangements might you need to make with your school?
