Greek - 2007

Greek Advanced 1A and Greek Advanced 1B

Introduction

Greek is not only the national language of Greece and Cyprus, but also an official language of the European Union and one of the most widely spoken languages in Australia. Indeed, it is difficult to travel anywhere in the world without encountering Greek speakers — the Greek Government estimates that there are seven million Greeks living outside Greece. Having been in continuous use for four thousand years, Greek is also an extremely rich language. Many of the world's greatest works of philosophy, history, literature and theology were written in Greek.

Career Opportunities

Hellenic Studies can prepare students not only for a career in teaching, translating, interpreting and other obvious uses of linguistic skills, but can also give a competitive advantage to practitioners of a wide range of other professions in Melbourne - commercial, legal, medical, social services, tourism - due to the size of the local Greek community. Demographic studies confirm that professionals with highly developed Greek language skills will continue to be in demand in Melbourne well into the new millennium. Students wishing to keep open the option of working in Europe at some stage should also note that there is a broad range of professional opportunities in Greece for English speakers with high-level fluency and literacy in Greek.
