Art History: Theory and Controversy and Modern Art: The Politics of the New

Introduction

This subject area introduces you to the most significant and provocative themes in the history of art and to the many complex and challenging ways in which these have been interpreted.

In the first semester you will be able to test your views on issues such as the relation of art to its materials and techniques, to social and political ideas and to ideals underlying depiction of the human body.

In the second semester you will explore the contexts which shape our experience of art. These include the diverse ways of producing, exhibiting, and analysing art, ranging from the salons of 19th century Paris through to the blockbuster museum exhibitions of the 20th century.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities for graduates in Art History are to be found in teaching and in academic research, in the arts industry as curators, administrators, and directors of art galleries and museums, in the commercial sphere of dealerships and auction houses, and as critics, journalists and arts writers. The School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology offers a number of honours and post-graduate programs in all these areas.

Students should note that this subject involves historical research and very good writing skills. Without demonstrated skills in these areas you would find this subject difficult.

VCE Prerequisites

Completion of one of Art, History, International Studies, or Studio Arts 3/4 in Year 11; or enrolment in the same in Year 12 after completion of one of Art, History, International Studies, or Studio Arts 1/2. Students must obtain an A/A+ average in the subject areas mentioned, and a B+ average across non prerequisite subjects.

Teaching Location

All lectures are delivered at at the University of Melbourne. Students will enrol in tutorials either at St Monica's College or at the University of Melbourne.
