Hebrew - 2008

Hebrew 3A and Hebrew 3B

Introduction

Hebrew, one of the major Semitic languages, has had an enormous impact on Western culture. It is one of the oldest languages in the world, having been spoken from about 1200 BC to the present day in Israel. Hebrew studies incorporates the learning of Hebrew, with the reading of fascinating Hebrew texts, short stories, novels and newspapers. If you are interested in exploring the Jewish experience in more depth, you can undertake Hebrew Studies as part of the interdepartmental Jewish Program.

By the completion of these subjects you should have acquired an enriched knowledge of the language through the use of modern Hebrew literature, the modern idiom spoken in Israel today, its vocabulary, grammar and syntax. This will prepare you for a broader range of experiences and use of the language in social and cultural activities.

Career Opportunities

Graduates who have majored in Hebrew studies have found employment as teachers, academics, translators, interpreters, writers, journalists, editors, in various areas of the public service and in professions serving the large, local Jewish community.

Completion of Hebrew 3/4 in Year 11 or equivalent. Applicants who have not completed Hebrew 3/4 will be required to attend an interview and/or sit a test to determine whether their proficiency is equivalent to Unit 3/4 level.
