IntroductionYou may be interested in Latin for many reasons. For example, by enabling you to read primary sources, a knowledge of Latin can open up your chosen area of study whether it be Politics, Philosophy, Church History and Theology, Mediaeval Studies or Art History. It is also the basis of many modern languages, and is itself the language of the literature and thought of the Roman Empire. Career OpportunitiesProspective employers of graduates in Arts are often aware of the benefits deriving from rigorous study of the ancient world and its texts and intellectual traditions. This means that the studies offered by the Centre are of general relevance. There are also specific opportunities, especially in Latin, in the field of secondary education. VCE PrerequisitesCompletion of Latin 3/4 in Year 11. Students must obtain an A/A+ average in Latin, and an A average across non prerequisite subjects. Note: Classes may be timetabled during school hours ObjectivesParticipation in Intermediate Latin subjects introduces you to a wide range of texts in a climate of up-to-date critical discussion. Major classical genres are handled in the subjects and you are given the chance to study some works in their entirety. As an Extension Program student you will come to the program with a sound linguistic knowledge which you have gained through your schooling. This course will provide an opportunity for you to greatly improve on this knowledge and to excel in your translation and critical studies. The nature of the course allows you to appreciate the set texts in historical context and at the same time to continue honing your intellectual skills.
