Music - 2008

Ensemble and Chamber Music

Introduction

The Faculty of Music is committed to excellence in all its activities, and has long had a role of leadership in the musical community. Its objectives are:

  • to nurture and develop a wide range of musical talents and skills;
  • to foster excellence in the areas of research scholarship in music studies, composition and performance and promoting an understanding of music in its social and historical development; and
  • to promote informed interest in music and the performance of music, within the University and the community.

Career Opportunities

Employment possibilities for music graduates vary between specialisations. Openings exist in both professional and semi-professional orchestras, in the community as teachers, performers, composers, music therapists, musicologists and ethnomusicologists, and in business as administrators, concert managers and music critics.

VCE Prerequisites

Students must achieve a B+ average across their VCE studies, and meet the selection criteria below.

To be eligible for selection for Extension Program Music, students must possess exceptional ability, well beyond the Faculty of Music's entrance audition standard (usually a B at AMEB Grade 7). Examples of exceptional achievement used as selection criteria include:

  • A student who passes an L Mus A with distinction.
  • A student who has been a finalist in a national competition (e.g. ABC Young Performers Award).
  • A student who has appeared professionally as a soloist with a major concert promoter (e.g. the ABC, Musica Viva).

Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from their school music director or music teacher outlining their aptitude and achievements. If the letter of recommendation indicates that the applicant is of an appropriate standard, the applicant will be invited to an audition at the Faculty of Music. Auditions are usually held in December. Successful audition applicants, who also achieve at the required level in their other studies, will be offered a place in the Extension Program.

Organisation of Special Program

Programs arranged for exceptional students are done so individually and require the agreement of the student’s school and parents. They usually involve:

  • placement of the student for advanced chamber music and other small group tuition with students from within the Bachelor of Music degree, under the supervision of a member of the Faculty’s practical teaching staff; and
  • participation in Faculty ensemble activities.

The Faculty agrees to accredit these studies towards the Bachelor of Music course.

PLEASE NOTE: The class activities are compulsory and may take place during school time. (For instance, Chamber Music activities have been taking place at 9.00am.) Students should check the time of these classes before applying to undertake Music to ensure that they can participate in the classes.

Teachers in the Program

Unlike other programs at the University of Melbourne, the program in Music is taught at the Faculty. The program is chiefly a means whereby an exceptionally gifted student may meet and play with others of similar ability under the supervision of an instrumental specialist of front professional rank and be credited for it.
