IT Access in teaching spaces

Learning Space Support at the University have advised that as of the start of Semester 2 (Monday 27th July 2009) users without a University of Melbourne account will not be able to use access all features of presentation computers in our venues.

This requirement has been made in response to I.T security concerns relating to potential breaches of both entertainment and malicious rogue software appearing on these shared space computers. This requirement will prevent both internal and external users accessing all features of the presentation computers anonymously as they have been able to in the past.

Users without an account will be restricted to being only able to use the following features on presentation computers:

•  Read-only version of PowerPoint (under which it is possible to give PowerPoint presentations, but not alter them)

•  Internal Pages on University web site

Access to external internet sites and the ability to update documents via the presentation computer will not be possible without a University of Melbourne account.

Options that remain available to you as an external hirer are to:

•  Use the presentation computers in venues under the restrictions described above

•  Run presentations from your own portable computer (via data cable to audio visual facilities in venues)

•  Arrange to have a temporary University of Melbourne account set up for your event so as to attain full access to presentation computers.

Please note that due to the complexities and lengthy timeline involved in setting up a temporary account, we recommend that you explore the other options suggested above prior to considering this approach. If you would like to set up a temporary account, please contact our office for further information.
